Synopsis

Six months ago, the world watched in horror as we lost an American city.

"The Grinder." That's what the survivors of Tucson called the monster. Just one touch, and they became a part of it. It used their bodies as limbs... and as weapons. In just a matter of hours, it became a towering monstrosity, made entirely out of tens of thousands of people and animals. This isn’t behind-the-scenes bullshit from the point of view of the military. This isn’t yet another conspiracy theory about what really happened to Air Force One that night, nor is it about the decision to nuke Tucson.

This is a rare, eyewitness account from someone who was there, amidst the destruction. Most importantly, this is the terrifying truth.

Dark with no purpose

The characters fell flat for me, like bible-paper thin flat. The MC has no redeeming qualities. He’s just “Thoughts and prayers” all the way through. Fun horror story twist at the end that I simply couldn’t enjoy as all my personality and emotion had just taken an 8 hour beating. I love Matt’s work. Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon is in my top 5 books of all time. This is well below his usual thoughtful, deep, cynically funny work full of fully fleshed characters. Im going to go listen to Kaiju again as I’m in severe need of some uplifting content.

Another brilliant story

best author and narrator trio in the game. Jeff Hays & Annie Ellicott narrate this brilliantly as ever. Matt Dinninmans story telling hits the mark as always. from DCC to Kaiju and now this, each one has been its own unique style, brilliant twists and turns and just fantastic. i antisipated a zombie novel but was very surprised of the concept and wont go into detail to avoid spoiling it for anyone. definatly give this a try, brilliant.

What a ride!

I was sucked in from the very beginning. Attached even. I finished the book in less than 24 hours. The characters are great, the story well crafted, the gore on thorough display and the voice acting & sound mix... SBT, Jeff Hays, Annie Ellicott and Matt Dinniman knocked another one out of the park! I see a second listen in my near future!

Plot

Once again, Matt’s depravity births a masterpiece.

I can only assume that one Firday the 13th Matt got together with Lovecraft and Cronenberg, dropped acid, marathoned every Katamari Damacy ever made and decided to have a threeway atop the necronomicon. Their fluids intertwined on some of the blank pages and The Grinding was born. The absurd creativity combined with the visceral body horror and deep soul wrenching trauma build a story so grounded in pain and love that I again worry for Matt’s emotional well being. Easily 5 stars and I highly recommend this to any fan of the horror genre.
